Two weeks into the New Year and our bright, shiny ambitions for changing our lives are starting to look a little tarnished. We downloaded the KonMari method book, we’ve bought some new gym clothes, we’ve cracked open our planners…and our lives kinda feel the same as they did before because we are too busy to read the book, work out in the clothes or write in our planners.

We have become so chronically driven by our business that we are stressed by the thought of change. It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?"

Henry David Thoreau

How to you break the busy cycle and actually effect change? It’s simple to say, and oh-so-hard to do. It’s two (big) steps.

  1. Stop. Say No. Do Nothing. Shut down the bully “to-do” loop in your head. Create and protect a pocket of space if not in your day but in your week. Schedule it on your calendar and treat it like a VIP meeting.

During that time (and no multi-tasking on the treadmill or social media), let your mind rest…let it wander. Give your mind time to sift through falls of information and let the big stuff float to the top. Pay attention to the ideas that come. Many, many times when you give yourself permission to have this time, you will begin to see the pathway to change. Listen to your gut. Are there small changes you want to make in your laundry routine, or big changes you to see in your life or relationships?

  2. Figure out the skills you need to make the change. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle

No one shows up an expert. But if you are like me, you think the mere act of DOWNLOADING THE ORGANIZATIONAL BOOK means my drawers are going to be pristine. I’m really good at identifying the goal, but the follow through to get there is a challenge.

The key is to break it down into steps. Start at your goal and write backwards what steps it would take to get to where you want to end up. When you have laid out a road map, start at the beginning and add the first three “to-do” items on that map to your schedule.

As we head into a new year, this is the time to give ourselves the keys to our own success. Make space in your to-do list to listen to your needs, and then give yourself a map to accomplish those goals.

You may be surprised at what you will do.
