The definition of elegant engineering is to achieve the required load, whether it be weight on a bridge or lift with a wing, with the absolute minimum of material while meeting cost and maintenance goals.  Of course, setting the objective is the easy part and there a lot of things that can go wrong way before between design and execution but it is critical to stay focused on the objective.  In an IT setting the objective is to delivers services to users with the optimal number of databases, servers, applications, user interfaces and all the associated sundry components.  The problem of course is that IT'S REALLY HARD to convince user groups that they don't need their own application and that even though it might take a little longer the benefits of combining three different applications into one will yield better support, better engineering and better data.  So what does all this mean?  Simply, the fewer databases, the better.
